2010 Up and Coming F1 Talent – Robert Kubica
The highly rated young Pole had a miserable 2009 season and will be praying that 2010 is a significant improvement.
When challenging for the drivers’ title in 2008, Kubica publicly made it clear how he wanted the team to put its resources into the ‘08 car and not the ‘09 car, saying that you have to make the most of each chance you get to win a title, while BMW said they were sticking to the plan that 2009 was their title year.
Who was right?
Well BMW have gone and Kubica remains a sought after property.
Last years’ BMW turned out to be a horror show, an early podium for Kubica was on the cards in Australia, and a highly probably win, running in third place and closing on the leaders, he clashed with Sebastian Vettel in a clumsy incident in the closing stages.
While Heidfeld picked up a fortunate second place in the chaotic Malaysian grand prix, Kubica had engine problems and never featured, and it was not until Belgium that the car finally began to show some pace, both Kubica and Heidfeld running strongly in the points, Robert coming home in a strong 4th place.
Despite the team announcing they were pulling out of Formula One at the end of the year, the team kept up development on the car and Kubica showed the world once again what he is capable of, hustling his car to a brilliant second place in Brazil, pushing race winner Mark Webber all the way.
Now he is at Renault, the team who gave him his first Formula One test and who themselves are coming out of a 2009 to forget.
Renault are looking for a new Alonso, someone to build the team around, and Kubica could well be their dream ticket.
At BMW, Kubica was often at ends with the management over the direction of the team, but Renault will listen to Kubica like they listened to Alonso, and they will be looking to work together to re-establish themselves as forces in Formula One.
Kubica and Renault could be 2010’s dark horses, one is a fine racer, one of the most highly rated throughout the paddock, the other, though coming out of some troubled times, achieved back to back drivers and constructors’ championships as recently as 2005/2006. Both Renault and Kubica know how to win in this game.
