The McLaren man edged out World Champion Sebastian Vettel by 0.222 seconds.
Hamilton’s team-mate Jenson Button was third, followed by Red Bull’s Mark Webber, Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso.
It was Hamilton’s first pole since the Canadian Grand Prix last year and after a frustrating season, a very welcome qualifying session.
Having show excellent pace in yesterday’s practice session and storming to pole position today, Hamilton will hope to follow it up with a Grand Prix win tomorrow.
