Vettel surges to pole for Belgian GP
Sebastian Vettel snatched pole position from Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber as the German claimed his 9th pole of the 2011 season.
On a another wet day at Spa the German showed yet again the raw one lap speed of his Red Bull to claim pole by almost half a second from Hamilton, who was involved in more than his fair share of controversy.
Webber had looked certain to claim pole after leading the way in two of the three practice session, but after he, Vettel and Hamilton exchanged quick laps in the closing stages of Q3, the Australian got a little ragged on the final lap and ended up in third.
The changeable conditions meant it was a case of being in the right place at the right time, and Vettel times his charge to perfection to claim yet another pole position.
Felipe Massa enjoyed an excellent session to out qualify his team-mate Fernando Alonso, a rareity this season with the Spaniard having a session to forget, while Bruno Senna in his first race since replacing Nick Heidfeld for Renault will be delighted with his qualifying that sees him start Sunday’s race from 7th behind another excellent qualifying performance from Torro Rosso’s Jamie Alguersuari.
The god’s of fate had little time for sentiment as Michael Schumacher, competing in the race which marked the 20th anniversary of his first ever formula 1 race, crashed spectacularly on his first lap in Q1 after a wheel on his Mercedes came dangerously loose.
That ended the German’s qualifying and means he will start from the back of the grid on Sunday.
Times tumbled dramatically during Q1 as the track dried from the rain that fell during the morning practice session, but with conflicting messages coming over team radios over the possibility of rain, all remaining 23 cars made it on to the circuit to put in a time before any rain could halt the session.
Intermediate was the tyre of choice as grip was slowly found, with both McLaren’s and both Red Bull’s looking quick throughout while Ferrari seemed a step off the pace.
After his shunt during practice on Friday there was more bad news for Force India’s Pau di Resta as the Scot failed to make it through to Q2, nudged out by another good run by Lotus’ Heikki Kovalainen.
Di Resta was joined by Jarno Trulli, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Daniel Ricciardo in being eliminated from Q1, while Jerome D’Ambrosio will be disappointed to be starting from 21st in front of a passionate home crowd.

The break in session put Fernando Alonso in particular under pressure to record a quick lap with time running out on cold tyres with traffic ahead, but the Spaniard managed to pull it together with two minutes remaining to make it through to Q3.
Hamilton was also almost caught out by the session break as he charged to put in a quick time, with the 2008 champion even coming into contact with the Williams of Pastor Maldonado as he made a desperate attempt to make Q3 in the dying seconds of the session.

The same couldn’t be said of Button though, who got bumped down to 13th in the frantic dash in the closing stages of Q2.
The 2009 champion may have something to say about having to yield to Hamilton in order to get the 26-year-old through for a quick lap.
Button and Maldonado were joined by Vitaly Petrov, Rubens Barrichello, Adrian Sutil and Heikki Kovalainen in dropping out in Q2.
Slick tyres emerged for Q3 as the circuit slowly dried out, but Spa fought back as Felipe Massa span wide early on in Q3. That was only the start of the action as the track offered more grip and times fell, leading to a three way shoot-out between the top three.
