Button: Vettel in ‘best position possible’
Following Jenson Button’s victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, the McLaren driver has been speaking about the pressure on Championship leader Sebastian Vettel.
Button was in a similar position to the German in 2009, leading the Championship at the halfway stage and working hard to maintain the lead during the second half of the campaign.
Vettel has now failed to win any of the last three races and failed to secure a podium finish at the German Grand Prix, the first time this has happened in 12 races.
This has led to many claiming that he is crumbling under the pressure, but Button doesn’t see it like that.
The Englishman said: “He’s already won the world championship, which is very important. You don’t feel the pressure so much, when you’ve already done it.”
“It wasn’t easy for me to win consistently by the end of the year but he still has a massive lead. He has no need to take risks and he’s driving a competitive car. Red Bull has great resources, so it’s a different situation to the one I found myself in with Brawn.”
“If I had the lead he’s got, I wouldn’t be feeling any pressure at all! He’s facing a nine-race world championship and he’s starting it with an 80-point lead! That’s a massive gap. And he’s still in one of the quickest cars. That’s the best position possible.”
Button had recently said that he wants to target Vettel in the remaining races of the season, but he clearly thinks that it is a big ask to overtake the German.
One thing for sure is that Button is in great spirits going into the three week break and is happy with life at McLaren as they continue compete with Red Bull and Ferrari for Grand Prix wins.
