It was all smiles for Lewis Hamilton after he produced a stunning lap to take second place behind Mark Webber at the German Grand Prix qualifying.

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel took third place as things shaped up nicely ahead of Sunday’s race. Fernando Alonso was then in fourth, with Felipe Massa in 5th and Nico Rosberg in 6th.

Jenson Button was next in line after aborting his final run. The McLaren driver finished 1.2 secs behind his team-mate Hamilton.

Completing the top ten were Adrian Sutil, Vitaly Petrov and Michael Schumacher.

Reaction:

Lewis Hamilton: “I definitely underestimated how good the car was with light fuel. It was one of the happiest laps I’ve had. It felt incredible.”

David Coulthard on Hamilton: “From where Lewis has come from this season he has been able to raise his game and deliver. He was so quick in the first sector of the lap and that was the key to his lap.”

Mark Webber: “My form has been getting better and this track not been too bad for me in the past. The boys did a great job on the car – there were some late nights in the lead up to here but we got it together in the end. After my lap I thought that if someone gets me they deserve it because I was at my limit and it was a great lap.”

Sebastian Vettel: “It is not a disappointment. I would like to be further up but it was a tough session. The balance was not right yesterday and although we made a bit of a recovery today, we should have been quicker.”
