Is the Formula One World Title now out of reach?
The final race of the season takes part in the dusk of Abu Dhabi on Sunday. There are four drivers still in with a mathematical chance of winning the World Championship. Jenson Button’s chance of retaining his title ended last week in Brazil.
His team mate Lewis Hamilton still has a faint hope of a second World title. He’s 24 points behind Fernando Alonso with only 25 points available. So Hamilton needs to win and Alonso to record a DNF. However that still might not be enough for the title, he’d need Mark Webber to score less than nine points and finish sixth or lower, he’d also need Sebastian Vettel to score less than 16 points and finish third at best.
Lewis doesn’t really stand a chance of winning the title; however that means there is no pressure on him going into the race. You never know what could happen, an incident on the first lap could take out two of his rivals and with Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel having limited engines a problem could easily arise with one of them like with Vettel in Korea. So there is a chance but it’s only a small one.
This weekend the 2010 Formula 1 season comes to an end! It’s been a rollercoaster of a season, which has had highs, lows and the downright controversial. Three new teams entering the race for the chequered flag, especially seeing the return of Lotus has been a particular highlight for me. Although it’s been a fantastic season, what happened in Budapest has left a sour taste on the tongue. The team orders there could have handed Fernando Alonso the World Championship which would be totally wrong!
