If no decision is made Red Bull risk losing the Championship
As the Formula One band wagon rolls into Singapore, Red Bull must surely choose Mark Webber to focus on if they want to win this year’s World Championship. With Webber approaching the twilight of his career, this will be one of the last opportunities for the Australian to win the World Championship whereas his young German team mate will have plenty of time to secure success.
Bearing this in mind, Vettel must accept that he has to play second fiddle for the rest of this season, even if that does mean his over-inflated ego is dampened a bit. Do I think that this will actually happen? No.
I’m sure it will have not escaped your notice that team boss Christian Horner has a slightly favouring hand towards Vettel and can’t honestly see Horner having the bottle to come over the team radio and tell Vettel to let Webber past if it came to it…not that team orders are allowed, obviously!
Well this leaves the team in a bit of a pickle. If they continue to let both drivers race each other, chances are they are going to lose the World Championship to McLaren or even the on-form Ferrari of Alonso. Ferrari don’t have this problem as Massa is way behind and as Hockenheim showed us, the Scuderia are not afraid to bark orders Massa’s way.
So who is favourite going into this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix? Despite all the claims that this track should suit the Red Bull’s, McLaren have the upper hand when it comes to the past 2 years. Lewis Hamilton loves this track and has secured a 3rd and 1st place finish in 2008 and 2009, respectively. However, another Championship contender Fernando Alonso is the driver with most to smile about in the previous 2 years. Although acheiving the same results as Hamilton, the Spaniard was in a much inferior car in the Renault.
Red Bull and Mark Webber have not had much luck on this track with the Australian retiring as both races so far. Vettel has faired much better with a 5th and 4th place finish so far.
Despite the previous form, Webber is confident that the car can perform on this track.
“I’m hoping to improve on last year’s result as it’s a high down-force street circuit that should suit our car.
It’s got some similarities to Monaco and Budapest and we did well at both those circuits, so I’m hoping for a strong result.”
As far as the Championship goes, I still believe Webber has got what it takes to pull off a remarkable title victory but I think he might have to take a backseat this weekend.
The Red Bull’s will be quick, no doubt, but I think Sebastian Vettel has a point to prove and I can see the German winning this race and making Red Bull’s run-in even more complicated.
Prediction – Vettel 1st, Webber 4th
