When Felipe Massa was struck on his helmet by a suspension spring during qualifying for the 2009 Hugarian Grand Prix there would have been one person who was more worried than most: Anna Rafaela Bassi. Thankfully Felipe has made a full recovery and has returned to Formula One, but his wife Rafaela would have been very anxious following the incident. While Massa’s injury might have brought them closer together than ever, ironically it was the Brazilian’s struggles in F1 that first resulted in the two meeting.

At the start of his Formula One career Massa struggled as a rookie at Sauber. In his three seasons there he failed to finish higher than 12th in the Drivers’ Championship and the team dispensed of his services at the end of the 2005 season. This was not only a great move for his F1 career as it saw him join up Michael Schumacher at Ferrari, but it also led to him meeting Rafaela and the rest as they say is history. The story goes that Felipe was back home in Brazil and went to a friend’s house at the beach, where this guy was going out with a girl and she was a friend of Rafaela, need I say more?

After meeting while Massa was struggling as an F1 driver, the Brazilian went from strength to strength on the track and it’s unlikely that it was coincidental that Felipe’s motor racing success came about at the same time he was settled away from the paddock. The pair married in 2007 in Sao Paulo and two years later had their first son: little Felipe. In between Massa had to suffer the agony of finishing second in the 2008 Drivers’ Championship to Lewis Hamilton by one point, but at least he had Rafaela to console him. The Brazilian says “my wife is always helping me but after the last race in Brazil she was more depressed than I was.”

So Rafaela fully gets behind Felipe’s career on the track, but what do you need to know about the F1 WAG? Well, she certainly didn’t marry Massa for his money, as Rafaela has plenty of personal wealth herself. The Brazilian’s family owns the Guarana Brasil fashion label, ensuring she has plenty of clothes to choose from and gets to fly about on private jets as often as Felipe.
