Alonso to be streets ahead in Singapore?

Ferrari F1 driver Fernando Alonso and head to Singapore with only one thing in mind: keeping up their brilliant current momentum.

In an ominous stat for the field, the Spaniard heads to Asia as both the highest points scorer over the past four races, and the most successful driver at the new Singapore race track. Whilst sceptics will rightly argue that as far as manufacturing race wins go, his win in 2008 was so crafted that it made the move on at Hockenheim look like an incredibly daring, around the outside of a chicane kind of overtake, but you only need to look at his podium in 09 as evidence of  brilliance. Reaching the podium when your teammates can’t even score a point all season hints as to just how much of a threat Alonso can be this weekend.

It will be anything but easy for the Scuderia however. Red Bull may have faultered at Monza, but with its long straights nullifying the need for downforce, that was always going to be the case. The twisty Singapore track represents a closer style to Monaco or Hungary – both races which Mark Webber walked to victory. In spite of Jenson Button’s brilliant performance at Monza, Ferrari head here as the main rivals to try and stop the Aussie from extending his championship lead out of sight. Assuming Red Bull still have the pace shown at the Hungarian race, and any mistakes at this stage of the season will be impossible to recover from. That said, all of the top five championship contenders have been guilty of making them lately.

Felipe Massa’s job is simple this weekend – help your teammate as much as physically possible. Ferrari will be extremely encouraged by the fact that Red Bull just can’t seem to get their starts, well, started, without losing a plethora of positions. The Red Bull doesn’t take too kindly to overtaking, giving Ferrari a vital advantage when fighting through the field.

Ferrari remain as upbeat as they’ve been all season, though the team has been too inconsistent as a whole. Too often good results have been followed by uncharacteristic errors, only to be made up for with pace out of nowhere. If there’s any time to string together a few 25 points scores, we’ve certainly entered it.
