Lewis Hamilton remains on course to win his second world title after emerging victorious at the Belgian Grand Prix while his main challenger, Red Bull's Mark Webber, finished second.

However, the top two's team-mates, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel, were involved in an incident that forced last year's world champion out of the race, while the inconsistent German also failed to finish.

Hamilton led from the first corner to the chequered flag while Renault's Robert Kubica was third and Ferrari's Felipe Massa fourth. Force India's Adrian Sutil was fifth, with Nico Rosberg sixth for Mercedes.

Starting from pole position, Webber made a dreadful start and was sixth at the first corner but he managed to force his way back through the field to eventually finish second and retain his title hopes,

However, there was drama elsewhere as, at the end of the 16th lap, Vettel lost control of his car as he braked on the damp track and ran into the side of Button's McLaren.

Although the Red Bull driver was able to rejoin the race, Button was forced to retire, and said after the incident: "All I felt was a really big bang in the sidepod and I lost drive immediately.

"I don't know what he was playing at really. From the point of view of the championship, it's a massive blow."

Fernando Alonso span off the track on the 39th lap and was forced out of the Grand Prix which was eventually won by the supreme Hamilton who drove the perfect race.
