Is a repeat of Spa ’09 on the cards?
If Force India’s performance at last year’s Belgian Grand Prix is anything to go by then we may well be in for a shock result at Spa-Francorchamps this year.
Both Adrian Sutil and Vitantonio Liuzzi can take heart from Giancarlo Fisichella’s heroics in 2009.
Liuzzi has played down talks of Force India challenging for a win but the Italian has still said that a podium is still possible. I would be inclined to agree with him.
Yes Force India have struggled of late but now they have had a break, I expect the team to come out guns blazing.
The last two Grands Prix in Germany and Hungary did not go exactly to plan for the team but with Spa-Francorchamps and Monza to come, these tracks should suit the VJM03 better.
Midfield
With Williams and Sauber closing the gap to Force India, it is vital that Vijay Mallya’s team start the second half of the season positively and score points.
I’m sure Mr. Mallya will want Force India to significantly reduce the gap between themselves and Renault for the remainder of this season. Easier said then done!
Both Sutil and Liuzzi also have to improve their qualifying form. In recent Grand Prix’s both Williams and Sauber have made it into Q3 ahead of both Force India drivers and this is something that needs to be addressed in the Force India camp.
As well as finishing in front of your rivals in the race, qualifying is just as important and Adrian and Tonio must get their act together to stand a chance of finishing in the points.
Thrills
The Belgian Grand Prix has given us many memorable Grand Prix’s and hopefully Force India will have another delightful Belgian weekend.
As we have seen in the past in Belgium, the weather has played a major part and yet again the weather could be a key factor this weekend.
Personally I would love to see another rain affected Belgian Grand Prix and who knows a shock result. This is what makes Belgium so special.
Every Formula One driver without question will relish the challenge that Spa-Francorchamps provides and driving through Eau-Rouge at high speeds must be something special.
Prospects
Everyone associated with Force India will be hoping the team can bounce back this weekend.
If Force India can have a positive Belgian Grand Prix, then this weekend could be the weekend that rejuvenates their season and gets it back on track.
Adrian was unlucky not to finish in the points in Hungary but the German will see Belgium as the perfect opportunity to finish in the points.
Sutil has done a terrific job for Force India and he is not far behind Michael Schumacher in the Drivers’ Championship. It would be a great achievement for Adrian if he did finish ahead of Schumi and I would not bet against it.
It’s been tough going for Tonio since the Canadian Grand Prix but hopefully the summer break has revitalised him. The former Toro Rosso driver needs to get back to scoring points because he has been on 12 points for some time now.
Like Sutil, the Belgian Grand Prix is a great opportunity for Liuzzi to have a strong weekend. With Force India expected to do well, it is crucial that Vitantonio makes the most of it.
For all the Force India faithful ‘Keep the Faith’ and let’s hope the team have a strong end to the 2010 season.
