Hamilton flirts with Belgian barrier in Spa success
Lewis Hamilton storms to victory in an action packed Spa Grand Prix which had everything, from the rain to the safety car.
Both McLaren drivers had sensational starts off the line taking advantage of Mark Webber’s poor get away. Jenson Button closely followed his team mate for the first few laps until the first safety car of the race was called out.
Once the safety car went in it was clear Hamilton had more speed and began to pull away from the pack. Button was coming under more and more pressure from Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel, when an error by Vettel ended up taking Button out and ending the 2009 World Champion’s race.
Later on in the race the rain began to fall again, Hamilton flirted with a barrier just managing to keep his car from hitting it, then it was back to the pits to change for intermediate tyres. A mistake by Robert Kubica allowed Mark Webber to jump him in the pit stops meaning that Hamilton’s main title challenger only dropped seven points to the Brit.
This result means that now Lewis Hamilton is once again leading the World Championship, just three points ahead of Mark Webber. Perhaps more importantly if the team decide to back one driver then Hamilton has made a real claim as he’s pulled out a lead of 35 points to his team mate.
McLaren have also closed the gap in the Constructors race, their now on 329 points just the one behind the Red Bull team.
The next race of the season is the fast flowing straights of Monza where McLaren hope to use their “F-Duct” to full advantage and hopefully give them a lead heading into the last five races of the season.
