McLaren dodge controversy this time round
For the first time in a while the McLaren team hasn’t been involved in the controversy surrounding a Grand Prix. They had a solid yet unspectacular race with Lewis Hamilton finishing in fourth and Jenson Button coming home just behind him in fifth place.
The weekend started off badly when in first practise Hamilton spun off in the wet causing damage to his car, putting McLaren on the back foot from the start. From then on it was clear that McLaren didn’t have the pace to match with the Ferrari’s and Red Bulls.
In qualifying both drivers struggled to get a decent lap together. Jenson could only manage fifth on the grid with team mate Hamilton a spot behind in sixth place. At the start of the race both McLarens got off to a good start. Hamilton managed to jump two places up to fourth. Jenson would have been higher if he wasn’t forced to run wide dropping him down to sixth.
During the race it was clear the McLaren’s couldn’t match the pace of the front three, Lewis came into the pits early to cover off one of the Red Bulls, whereas Button stayed out longer and got his strategy to work, leap frogging Mark Webber to get into fifth place. After the pits stops the McLarens followed each other home to a comfortable fourth and fifth place.
After this weekend Lewis Hamilton still leads the Drivers Championship with a 14 point lead to Jenson Button. Who is an extra seven points ahead of the Red Bull drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. McLaren still also lead the Constructors Championship by 28 points from the Red Bull Team.
The next race is this weekend in Hungary at the Hungaroring where the McLaren’s will hope to have the pace to keep their lead at the top of the table.
