Hispania in need of Toyota deal
Sakon Yamamoto gets his second chance for Hispania this weekend, taking over Karun Chandhok’s seat for the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.
But the positive news for Hispania going into the team’s eleventh race is a potential deal with Toyota which could secure for the 2011 season at least.
An agreement could be signed this weekend which would give the fledgling team access to a range of Toyota’s equipment including chassis, gearboxes, engines and mechanics; a deal which would give the backmarkers a real shot in the arm.
With the FIA reintroducing the 107% qualifying rule next year, Hispania are desperately in need of technical input to help ensure they make it to race days in 2011.
Back to the weekend, and the team have decided Yamamoto deserves another crack at a full race weekend but this time alongside Bruno Senna. As a result rumours have started to revolve around the future of Chandhok but the team have been quick to defend their decision.
“After Sakon Yamamoto gave a very positive performance in Silverstone, the team has decided to give the Japanese driver another opportunity to drive the car alongside Bruno Senna. Karun Chandhok is still part of the Hispania Racing, HRT F1 Team family and is likely to be in the car at some later races this season.”
Despite a poor showing at Silverstone, both drivers though are looking forward to racing on a track though which has helped them to strong results in the past, with Senna in particularly doing well here in 2008.
“I am looking forward to the race in Hockenheim as I have had a podium finish in GP2 in 2008 and I really like this track. Hockenheim is one of the circuits where downforce is not as important as Silverstone or Barcelona, so I believe we will be slightly more competitive against the other new teams and I hope to have a good battle against them.”
Hispania will be hoping that Senna prophecy is correct if they are to reclose the gap between themselves and Virgin Racing.
