Mercedes quietly go about their business
The Turkish Grand Prix will go down in the history books as one of the true classics of the modern era. Unfortunately, Mercedes won’t be appearing much in the videos that show the dramatic action.
Sponsors of the Brackley-based team will be getting annoyed as the two cars have rarely got much tv-time during this season.
The ‘Silver Arrows’ have been quietly going about their business, with the last corner at Monaco the only time they’ve been involved in a memorable talking point.
And Turkey was much the same. Michael Schumacher got past Jenson Button at the start, but couldn’t keep the reigning World Champion behind him for long, so he settled down in front of Nico Rosberg and the two weren’t seriously threatened for the entire race.
Rosberg actually had a train of cars behind him for large parts, but Robert Kubica never looked like finding an overtaking opportunity, which is a shame as two potential future-world champions scrapping away would have been terrific entertainment.
This lack of action wouldn’t have been a problem to Ross Brawn, however, as the weekend saw a Mercedes improvement.
The Constructors’ Championship still sees them lie in fourth-place, but they out-performed both Renault and Ferrari throughout the weekend. They were comfortably the third best team on the track.
Formula One is all about improving throughout the year, and the jump they got over the ‘Prancing Horse’ will please ex-Ferrari man Brawn immensely.
Red Bull – and now McLaren too – are so far ahead that it may need more team-mate crashes for either driver to make it on to the podium regularly, but being the best-of-the-rest is fine for now.
More updates will be needed to keep this advantage in the coming months, with Brawn saying they were still fine-tuning their f-duct system to get the best performance out of it.
If they perfect that bit of the car, maybe Schumacher could battle more effectively should Button attempt to pass him on a straight again in the future.
Speaking of the updates, Rosberg seemed happier with the current specification than he did in Barcelona. There was hardly anything to choose between him and his more-experienced team-mate this weekend, though he’ll still have queries about how Schumacher is currently getting the better of him.
Rosberg still has a 32-point advantage in the standings, so should they continue to finish within a place of each other, the 24-year-old will end the season on top.
And with the teams ahead unreachable, and the teams behind playing catch-up, it is the battle between the drivers that takes centre stage.
Rosberg has the advantage in the standings, but Schumacher has started to get the better of him.
