Red Bull drivers press self-destruct button

Just when it looked like were going to score yet another 1-2 finish, and both had a moment of madness that cost the team victory. The question is, who’s fault was it?

The incident occurred on lap 41 of the 58 lap race and had everyone in the Formula One paddock talking. With just a matter of seconds separating the two Red Bull’s and two McLaren’s, neither Webber or Vettel could relax as the top 2.

All four cars appeared to be matching one another’s lap-times until Vettel got a run on Webber coming into the final complex. As the German went down the inside, Webber gave him a car-widths room to pass and Vettel duly obliged. Webber understandably didn’t back out of the move and as Vettel moved across on the Australian, the two collided, sending the German flying across the track and into retirement. Webber recovered to finish third behind Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.

The general consensus from the commentary team was that Vettel was at fault for the incident, but he was adamant that he had already passed Webber.

“I was quicker. I dived down the inside. I had the corner.”

Not unsurprisingly, Webber differed in his opinion of the incident, giving more insight into the collision.

“We’ll probably have a difference of opinion until we go to our graves.

Seb had top-speed advantage and went down the inside and I was thinking about the braking point. We were still a way from the corner. He came to the right pretty fast and it looked like he turned pretty quickly right.

Both of us have views on it and I hope that if we did it again I would not do a massive amount different from my side.”

So what of team boss ? Well he seemed to disagree with most and blame the incident at Webber’s feet.

“They should never have been where they were and they have cost the team a great deal of points.

The large mistake was that not enough room was given.

Mark has put Seb on the dirty side, he gave him just enough room and Seb cut across aggressively. He was a long way down the side but neither yielded and the net result is everybody loses.”

Despite not actually admitting this, Horner implied it enough, for now anyway, until the inevitably explosive de-briefing was over.

So apart from one corner, how did Red Bull do in Turkey?  Well, a 1-3 finish in qualifying and what should have been a 1-2 in the race, would imply that the team were as dominant as ever, but their margin over the rest of the field was significantly less than it has been in recent races. McLaren were able to comfortably hold on to the back of the Red Bull’s throughout the race which will be encouragement for the rest of the teams.

Plain and simple, Red Bull CAN be beaten.
