McLaren dominated the first practice session ahead of Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix with Lewis Hamilton setting the pace, marginally quicker than team-mate Jenson Button.

The 2008 world champion's time of 1m 28.653s bettered Button's quickest lap of 1m 29.623s.

Mercedes also enjoyed a good morning as Michael Schumacher edged out team-mate Nico Rosberg for third with 1m 29.750s, while Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel was fifth fastest, just ahead of the Renaults of Robert Kubica and Vitaly Petrov.

Mark Webber, winner of the last two races in Barcelona and Monaco, was the eighth fastest man in the second Red Bull, while Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Force India's Adrian Sutil completed the top ten.

Felipe Massa, winner of this race for three successive years until Button ended his run in 2009, was surprisingly a long way down the field in 13th.

Lotus were by some distance the fastest new team with Heikki Kovalainen setting a best lap of 1m 32.161s, ahead of team-mate Jarno Trulli on 1m 32.990s.

Adrian Sutil was caught out by the slippery surface, seriously damaging the front of his Force India when he crashed on Turn Eight.
