Sebastian Vettel led the way in qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix, taking pole position alongside Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber on the front row of the grid.

Vettel, who won the previous race this season in Malaysia, was more than two tenths of a second faster than Webber and the German will start full of confidence, having also won in China 12 months ago.

The second row is made up of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg in the fastest of the two Mercedes, with team-mate Michael Schumacher back in ninth place.

McLaren duo Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton will start from fifth and sixth respectively, with row four comprised of championship leader Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari and Renault's Robert Kubica.

Vettel said after sealing pole right at the death: "It was tough today. I was not so happy yesterday and this morning Mark was quite a bit quicker than me.

"But the second one was a fantastic lap in qualifying.

"We are proving we have a very fast car and independent of the circuit type, we are always able to be up there."
