is excited about the potential of the new McLaren car after driving it for the first time during testing in Valencia.

The Englishman was significantly slower than in his Ferrari but was satisfied that the problems he endured in the first half of the 2009 season had been overcome.

Hamilton did improve in the second half of the last year and won two races and he hopes to build on that form in 2010.

He said: "It's a different feeling compared to the first lap of the first test day of 2009. It's a positive feeling. I've kept a close eye on the development of this car. I've seen it evolve and had input into it which is very exciting.

"I got out smiling. The problems I had last year I don't have in this car. We felt quite comfortable with what we did in testing, but obviously there's a bit of time we need to find and a lot of areas where we can improve.

"It's too early to say that this is a car that can challenge, but I do feel it's a huge improvement from the beginning of 2009.

"The encouraging thing is reliability. We've had two days and not really had any problems and that's a huge plus for us. Ferrari seem very quick but we don't know what fuel loads everyone has got."
